useful beginning/mid captures
I'm coming back to this game after having played it on switch a couple years ago, and now that I have H'aanit I distinctly remember sinking a lot of time into capturing monsters only to find most of them were meh. Searching the net and these forums has lots of info on the best endgame captures, but I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on some early mobs worth getting? Just finished chapter 1 for all 8 chars.

Any suggestions appreciated, otherwise poor H'aanit will have to warm the bench to preserve my sanity.

Haanit was the second character I recruited and I did the two party style play through. My first party was Therion, Haanit, Tressa and Ophelia and honestly I completely ignored her beast capture. When I got around to doing the other 4 characters Olberic easily handled any path action encounters that Haanit would have struggled with. The recruit feature with Ophelia and Primrose has its uses, I just get the feeling with Haanit they created a class that has almost mandatory passives for alot of characters and then realized just how strong that class was so they gave her a totally worthless path action.

I wish I could give constructive help but yeah...... I just ignored that mechanic.

I also think its worth pointing out they essentially cloned path actions for half the characters and in most cases one character just has a better version. Therion is better than Tressa, except in a rare few cases where an item cannot be stolen and only (typically these are good items) purchased. Ophelia is better than Primrose, she never fails to recruit. Alfyn is better than Cyrus, he never fails to gather info. Lastly Olberic is better than Haanit, he gets to enter a battle and be himself rather than use a terrible limited summon system.

Despite the relative strength of some of the captured abilities, the amount of time you save by using them more than likely won't cover the amount of time you spent going out of your way to get them. Even the exciting-sounding endgame abilities like the Chubby Caits aren't worth the trouble in my opinion (unless you happen to be fighting one anyway and also get lucky with the capture) and you can easily do without.

That said, someone over on Reddit threw a fairly easy-to-read list (categorized by zone-level) of captures together which includes effects and power-ratings so if you want to flip through it and see if anything sounds interesting to you, it's a handy resource:

Thanks I'll check out the link. Though it seems you've confirmed my suspicions it won't be worthwhile pursuing at all, so sad. I generally like the 'beastmaster' class types in games but they really flubbed it in this one. If they could trim the fat down to a core list of skills and not make them consumable casts it would go a long way imho.

As for Dark's comments I agree with your assessment save one bit - I'm really glad to have Tressa's purchase ability, as there have been plenty of times I'd rather just buy an item outright than waste time with rng. Totally depends on item/circumstances so having the flexibility of both options has been nice. I think they're actually very complimentary skills, too bad they couldn't strike that balance with the other 3 sets. Here's to hoping they get it right in OT2

Yeah i dont disagree. There is nothing wrong with Tressa. Usually if I want to clear a town I use Therion, Tressa, Alfyn and Olberic as my party to gather every thing the town has.
