Octopath Traveller won't launch
Hi everyone!

Loving the game so far and I've spent about 26 hours the past couple of days playing the game.

Today I tried to launch the game on Steam and all I see is a black screen. For some reason, I'm unable start the game, whereas every other game in my library opens just fine. This didn't happen yesterday, which makes me confused as to what could have happened. Additionally, I'm unable alt+tab out of the black screen too (even though I can see the other applications).

I've made sure to have the latest drivers for my CPU and GPU, and I've removed the cached memory from the steam folder, tried to open the game outside of steam, uninstalled steam and the game and reinstalled it. Nothing seems to work!

My (relevant) specs are:

GPU: AMD Radeon 5700xt
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x

Any input would be appreciated!

did you update your video driver prior to getting this unfortunate bug or only after you noticed the bug? Also did you try to change your video setting in the game prior to getting this result?

Hi marcv666, I haven't updated my video drivers for a couple of weeks now (they were updated before buying the game). Also I did change the video settings during my playthrough yesterday so the game could better match my resolution (I was at 2560p when my monitor is 3440p). The change didn't reduce performance whilst i was ingame. Could this have made the problem happen?

sure, that's most likely what the problem is. You can probably try to reset the parameter, not sure where it is on your computer but i'll have a look at this to see if I can find it. Assuming deleting the config file will reset your setting to default.

ok the game is installed in this folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\OCTOPATH TRAVELER

So if I was in your position, the first thing I would try is to uninstall the game and see if there is anything left that remains in there (like a file related to your configuration). If anything didn't get erased I would do it manually and then reinstall the game. Now I don't know at all if this will work, I think it's still worth a try in your situation.

Okay! I'll try it out and get back to you.

oh, just found something better...
Look at this folder:
C:\Users\UserName\Documents\My Games\Octopath_Traveler

Delete this folder, might want to just save your "safe file" if you don't want to loose progress in the game. But I would expect your video setting to be in the config folder.

your video setting is most likely here:
C:\Users\Marc\Documents\My Games\Octopath_Traveler\Config\WindowsNoEditor

if you try to edit GameUserSettings.ini you'll see settings in it like this:
DesiredScreenWidth=1920
DesiredScreenHeight=1080

you may try to change it manually, but I think I would just delete those file so the game recreates them out of nothing with default parameters

Well, I've tried everything now. It still does not work. I've reinstalled the game, restarted my computer, removed the files, backed up my save data files and removed everything from the My games folder and it still does not work. The difference now compared to a few hours ago is that the game does not even open. Now the game does not even open.

The play button goes from green to blue, then after 5 seconds it goes back to green again.

=(

did you remove the files before or after reinstalling?
Auker Mar 3, 2021 @ 2:37am
Hi sorry for the delay. Yeah, i removed the files before reinstalling. I backed them up as well on another seperate folder too

Hi Marcv666, I finally got it to work. The file: GameUserSettings.ini was being recreated with 3440p instead of standard settings. All I did was change it to 1080 instead, then go ingame to change it back to 3440p. Now I can open the game without seeing the black screen!

Thanks for helping me out!

For me I was getting a black screen at launch. I disconnected my DAC, and re-enabled my on-board audio and the game launched without issue.

Just wanted to say that my usb dac was the problem as well. I guess the game isn't compatible with topping d90 dacs all of the sudden despite working when I first got the game. I switched from usb to the spdif optical input on the dac so the motherboards audio drivers would be used instead and the game starts up fine now.

The problem for me was my wifi was disconnected. Once I reconnected the game started fine.
