Ophelia and Olberic are mostly just there because of their useful post-game rewards that I typically want as fast as possible (and Olberic's Challenge is 'much' more effective than H'aanit's Provoke in the long run). Therion's around to grab the purple treasures and as a side-bonus, subbing him with Hunter gives him plenty of utility and break potential and decent damage if you get some high-end weapons early. Cyrus makes a good damage-dealer until you get the advanced classes and I just like having the free start-of-fight Analyze as a QOL feature.
Alfyn's concoct is amazing but I usually don't bother much with it until the end-game so he ends up getting benched until then. H'aanit and Primrose are hard to work in at all - I just don't think they bring much to the table that someone else isn't already doing better.
That's me, though. The game gives you all the tools you need to make anyone work, especially in the late-game when purple chests, money, and story-rewards are no longer much of a concern.
Yeah, again, I mostly keep Olberic around in the early to mid just because his post-game rewards are worth getting as early as possible and if you're going to farm for end-game gear via duels, having him leveled first saves a little time. In terms of actual combat efficiency, sure, pretty much anyone can do his or Ophelia's job well enough to get by.
Cyrus because he's the best at discovering weak points and easy to learn evasive maneuvers.
Tressa because money in this game is the biggest contributing factor to progress fast, to buy expensive stuff early.
Therion to open purple chest and steal NPC and bosses as there is so much stuff to grab with him
If you're new to the game I would definitly add Ophilia just for healing purpose, but if you are a veteran of the game it doesn't matter with subclasses available...
Late game H'aanit is one of the most powerful character with her capture mechanic, enabling you to apply invincibility buff to your party with the right monsters. Alfyn is very strong too with his concoct ability. Aside from that every characters is good, but stat wise it doesn't matter very much, the game is all about the gear you wear.
When grinding for levels in the end game, I usually have either Therion or Primrose as main damage dealer using sorcerer class. The reason is because these are the 2 characters with the most speed, so they are likely to act first in battle and one-shot any monsters with the right setup. Basically I use Therion to level up 3 party members and Primrose to level up 3 other characters.
Any combination works fine anyway, so just try whatever you like in the end.
Tressa (Thief->Runelord)
Cyrus (Cleric->Starseer)
Ophelia (Scholar->Sorcerer)
Therion (Hunter->Warmaster)
Having Cyrus and Ophelia both be able to heal and one-shot most Act 2 & 3 encounters was incredibly useful.
I don't understand your jobs. How are you changing their primary jobs???
I assume that the first jobs were the basic subjobs that were used until the advanced jobs were available. Primary jobs obviously can't be changed.
Cyrus - Best base class for leveling and progressing quickly, excellent base kit. Teachable skill that allows you to rush to job shrines before you can take the fights between them (Evasive Maneuvers).
Tressa - Versatile, self-sufficient. Passively and actively increases gold income; buying high-level gear is the fastest way to power-spike your team. Can boost entire team's defense and attack with sword at the same time (Hire Mercenary).
Olberic - Challenge is much more convenient and easier to handle than Provoke. Not especially interesting or useful skillset, but levels faster than anyone else, which helps him serve as a great team anchor even with his base kit.
Therion - Steals and opens purple chests for valuable money and items, both of which are most useful if used as early as possible.
B-Team (late game, secondary characters):
Ophilia - Mediocre talent. Works excellently as a hybrid mage, but needs a secondary class to be consistently useful.
Primrose - Mediocre talent. Garbage weapon option, 2 flat spells, can only buff one character at a time. Least favorite character, always feels lackluster.
H'aanit - Devastating physical attacker that scales well with items, secondary jobs, and support, but inflexible early on.
Alfin - Great tank and excellent combat ability, but needs to save up components and secondary JP to reach his potential.
