How difficult and complex is the combat?
I don't have much experience with JRPGs. How difficult and complex is the combat in this game? I've read a couple of places that you really need to understand the mechanics and strategy to beat the bosses. Is it highly challenging for someone new to the genre?

Thanks!

No, I don't think so. And it steadily gets harder, it doesn't just thrust you in with no idea what's going on. In fact, you may find it a bit boring early on, but it gets better as it opens up, and you can start trying different strategies and parties. Now, the post-game, which is optional content that takes place after you finish the story, is a fair challenge, but that's the very, very last thing to do.

I would agree that understanding the mechanics certainly makes your life easier but most of the important rules are pretty straightforward. Being turn-based, you have all the time you need to choose your actions and most of the stats that you need to make an informed choice (turn order, enemy weaknesses, current buffs/debuffs, and so forth) are clearly presented on screen. Essentially, most fights boil down to 'hit enemy with something that they're weak against until they're stunned and then hit them with your strongest attacks while they're down'.

There's more nuance as the game goes on of course and later, timing 'when' to break/stun an enemy is more of a consideration but as you play it and get used to how combat flows, the rules (and how to exploit them with the abilities that you slowly learn over time) will make more sense. Exploring the world also offers substantial rewards and can be a massive boost to your effectiveness in combat.

It's hard to rate the complexity without knowing what other kinds of games you're used to but as long as you can follow basic instructions and learn as you go, You'll probably be fine. I'd say it's a fairly accessible game and might even be a better-than-average choice for a JRPG newbie since you're not coming in with any preconceived ideas of how to play.

The combat is complex if you want to master it. But you never need to master it other than a few optional battles. The lack of difficulty is honestly one of my big complaints with the game, but for you it might be what you're looking for.

I guess it depends on your playstyle as well, if you're a completionist then the game will be very easy (and boring imo), except for a few optional battles, since you will just outlevel everything. If you rush through the game, not doing any optional content and lower the encounter rate with a skill, I imagine the game would be quite tough.
