Mikk and Makk battle - Targeting the wrong enemy

I might be missing a game mechanic but while targeting Mikk or Makk, I'd always attack the opposite character. Is this a weird bug or a game mechanic I'm missing. I noticed color of their names would change too. So far I think this is the only time I've seen this.

Looks like it's a character ability. Very strange that it's not explained well.

Hmm like the global gladiators megadrive game Mick and Mack :P

The color of the names changes as they lose health, they start out at white, then yellow at 50% and red at 20%, iirc.

There first turn they display a prompt like "X is protecting Y" or something along those lines.
