On my second playthrough, I obviously had to do a lot less exploring, and I also switched party members a lot more often, which made many of the fights actually challenging and require strategy. So I'd say if you try to finish all the chapters before your characters exceed the recommended level, it can be pretty challenging. Also, as the game allows you to play the chapters in any order you like, if you want even more of a challenge, you can go ahead and do the later chapters before you got a full party, as everything beyond chapter 1 is balanced for a full party.
This. I enjoy a challenge in games like this too. Due to the nonlinear nature of the game, you're able to directly control difficulty with what order you handle things. The "Evasive Maneuvers" skill can help with this - if you find your level is starting to get a little high, just use that skill. Or use it all game, that'll bump the difficulty a good bit.
Edit Reason: Usually if you are finding it hard, then you are doing something wrong. Also, Every time you go into a new village, you should always use Cyrus Or Alfyn's ability to talk to the villagers, then you steal what you can, then you use Tressa to purchase stuff always in that order.
If you are finding the game a bit too hard another trick is which I didn't do is to save the game before trying to steal something that has a very low % chance to steal. Then when you get your 4 strikes, just reload the game and try again.
Being a turn based RPG it is more about using your turns wisely and somewhat strategically and then it shouldn't be too hard at all.
If you want a hard turn based rpg, look for games like etrian odyssey or the shin megami tensei games.
When i played on the switch i never died, not even once, and i was not really over-leveled either.
Biggest downside is that after chapter 1 you will hardly have any variety in terms of combat, it is doing the same thing over and over and over again. Just imagine playing a final fantasy game, but have flare and meteor right at the start of the game, there is literally no progression until you are level 50 and get 3 more moves and that is it, you have seen everything the game has to offer.
I messed up and thought the boss was too easy and forgot to heal and replenish SP and suddenly boss summoned minions that did like 70% dmg and had 3 of them, and next time I was ready for that and could take them out super fast. so, it wasnt really hard but if you mess up or dont take it serious you can go down very fast on these bosses. Also, the bosses, after you dont 2 chapters seem to be very "tough" in terms of health, probably took me 15-20 min ...
