The next time I made sure I was not holding that item and everything worked fine, leading me to believe that they somehow never came across trying this in testing to discover this issue to fix it ahead of time, because my theory is the game tries to include the item in your hand in the cutscene, when it should have been programmed to just ignore that item and play the scene as normal if this happens. The game realizes that it was never told what do in this situation as it doesnt know whether or not it should try to shove it into the cutscene or ignore the item so it gives up and just goes black.
I think that's exactly what I did when I got this problem haha. There was another point early in The Phantom Menace where I had a black screen, but I don't remember if it was intentional or not. The game worked as normal after that particular black screen.
Certainly was the one to show this issue to me.
And it was the one I needed to restart the game for.
