Commander Keen Complete Pack

Commander Keen Complete Pack

Port for Linux?
Can we please have a port for Linux-based operating systems (such as Ubuntu and Steam OS)?

My understanding is that this works fine via DOSBox - which is natively available for Linux-based operating systems - so it's obviously achieveable... We just need the developer to actually offer it.

Keen Dreams will have native Linux support out of the box. :)

That's a different game (from the same franchise/series)... But have they confirmed somewhere that Keen Dreams is coming to Linux-based operating systems?

Of course, the downside is that Keen Dreams is one game - this pack is a compilation of all the "Commander Keen" games...

I made this exact same point with regards to Duke Nukem.

Well, it's a Keen game, and I currently own the rights to it. Keen Dreams is on Greenlight at the moment, and I can confirm that it will have native Linux support when it's released on Steam.

Forgive me for being nosey, but do you own the rights to the rest of the "Commander Keen" games?

If so, is there any chance we'll see the rest of the "Commander Keen" games made available to Linux-based operating systems (such as Ubuntu and Steam OS) in the foreseeable future?

Awesome, can't wait!

And thanks for your reply - it always means so much more when developers can spend a few minutes responding to customer/gamer enquiries and suggestions... It shows that you're actually listening (which is something not all developers can boast!).

Nope, I only own the rights to Keen Dreams. id/Zenimax owns the other Keens here. I dont know if they would be willing to sell them though...

The engine for all titles has already been ported to Linux:

I would say it has a lot to do with the simple fact that nobody uses Linux and nobody gives a ♥♥♥♥ about Linux. It has a laughable "market share" of not even 1.6%, which has been steadily on the decline since December 2013.
Why would any company invest precious time and money to port it to a system that barely has any users and maybe 1% of them are actual gamers? How much copies would they sell? 3 or 4? It's like asking if movie studios could still release their videos on VHS.
It's simply not worth it.

Uh huh... Until Steam OS - which is a Linux-based operating system - comes out pre-installed on the upcoming Steam Machines... Then we'll see just how small of a marketshare Linux has.

There's nothing to be afraid of you know, change is sometimes a good thing...

ShadowAngel ist correct. Linux is totally useless. Even the fact that the internet wouldn't exist without it and Linux dominating the server market can't disprove him.

And according to some statistics it almost doubles its userbase every year, but who cares? I mean, Microsoft is constantly messing up their OSes and making old games hard to play. Let's just stick with that. Because it costs money, it has to be good.

Valve disagrees with you. I'm sure you are more savvy in business matters than Valve of course.

Yes, its true that linux on the desktop doesnt have much market share, but Android is the number one on mobile and that is basically linux with java on top.

While I'm excited about Linux in gaming, and about putting Keen on Linux natively, I'm a bit skeptical about Steamos and the steam boxes. Steamos is basically Ubuntu with some hooks built into it. I have Ubuntu in my main working computer, and I like Ubuntu. The steam boxes need a lot to prove before they are a viable gaming product.

All you need to do is properly set DOSBOX for all 3 OS's anyway, unlike what was forgotton in this release.
