Death squads

How do the death squads work? And why does the reclaimed death squads attack me on sight? I thought they were my allies.

Basically, you aren't part of either one, having just arrived in New Orleans, or that general area anyways. They are both trying to rebuild it in their own way: militant 'Mama' vs. 'Jean Baptiste' (the dude you hear giving sermons over the Radio) and his cult. All the other npcs you come by on some maps are exiles like you, some are the beggars or theives you see standing around, others are grouped holding up bases (either neutral or hostile). The death squads are, well, death squads lol, they simply kill anyone who isn't part of their faction, including all exiles. That seems to be their only function in the game.

Your role is basically just a passerby who gets involved in various ways, hence a 'tourist'. There doesn't seem to be an honor or reputation system, but something along those lines takes place later in the game when you advance the story.

That's the basic gist of it anyways as far as I understood.

But I thought if you helped them and killed any tower people they wouldn't harm you?
