So can I just keep playing

I just answer to your second question : yes you can continue to play after the end of the main story. I only did one more day (i finished the game this morning), but i assume you can continue to play as long as you have enough things to survive.

Question to thoses who've continued to play long enough after end of the story : Do the materials keep decreasing and walkers keep increasing continually ?

You can continue for as long as you like yeah, the "Hardcore" achievement is actually surviving 30 days, I don't know if the zombie numbers / resource dwindling hits a cap but I would assume so.

Wow hardcore achievement is 30 days? I don't think I have even started the game and I'm on day 22. I actually dont even know how to trigger the start of the game. It has given me no quests or anything to do. I just sort of thought that was deliberate and I was supposed to find it out for myself. Now I just think the game is glitched.

The first thing you need to do to start the quests is to repair the microphone in the bus.

Grab at your right chest. There you will get the journal where you can read the quest objectives.

FYI, i'm at day 37 now, and from what i see, Walkers are a lot more, and materials to gather are harder to find :)
Gonna be great in 1 or 2 weeks :)

You have to find the microphone, and then put everything in place in the bus (battery, antenna, microphone).
Then the main quest will start. Do it, as the end is quiet interresting, with some hard decisions to make.
