It's not trying to simulate 24 hours. It's daytime the entire time you're in a level.
With Outer Wilds using 22 min, and this game using 23 min, I'm starting to think there is some science behind the idea that 20-25 minutes is a sweet spot for a "run" of a no-saving game. It works really well, and I'm never mad if I die, but always tense in the final minutes.
In this you need to run as certain death awaits you if you stay. Even if you stayed there will always be end of day and next day will never come so mechanic is off.
I think you`re spot on there. If the day was a lot longer, like say in Dying light or FO4 VR, we`d probably find very little to do after a couple of days.
