I know I'm in a minority but I really dislike the current gaming trend of having "survival elements" in game with having to eat/drink to keep stats up. It feels like 90% of my bag in this is full of drinks and snacks to keep my max stamina at a decent amount to be able to run longer than 10 seconds or swing my weapon more than once, but then all those things just deplete my max health so much that I can't take more than a few bite encounters.
The stamina depletes so fast that, if it runs out while I'm just trying to go down a road, then I can't pull out my bag and find a drink and hold it up to my face and do all that before getting eaten alive.
Yes, keeping our energy up is something we have to account for in life but it's not something that is depleted in minutes. I like the game but I just don't want to be micro managing two little bars the whole time. I want to kill some zombies and see the cool environment.
It would be cool if there was a difficulty option for people like me that don't want to micro manage stats (like how the Mass Effect games had the "just here for the story" option, the "just here for the action" option, and then the "balanced, here for both" option).
Get to da Choppa- Or boat.
I carry at most, 2 bandages, 1 meds (if I have them) and a soup with me. I refill my health and stamina every time I go to the bus before I go out for a new day and I rarely have to heal on site, it's almost a non-issue for me. I don't run more than a few seconds at a time, and I don't take on a group of 3 or more zombies with hand to hand combat. It feels quite balanced to me actually. But I do agree they should have some sort of difficulty options that limits the amount of upkeep you need to do to your character and maybe decrease stamina draw, but you get plenty upgrades to your stamina. Just gotta be a little more patient. As for the bells, pay attention to your watch. I usually start heading back to the boat when I have just under 1/4 of time left, unless im close and I know how long itll take me to get to a boat. I havent once yet fought a bell horde.
My first time in The Shallows, a random guy tried to strong arm me for food. I killed him but instead of getting his gun, I got the frame, so I reloaded thinking I could redo it, but I never saw him again.
As you get further in the game, you'll have enemies that emit a bile when they die, and if you get hit, it knocks like 15% health or so off, so you'll have to decide if you want to shoot them or not.
Bows are quiet if you want to be stealthy and shoot them, but both bows are too unreliable right now. No way to aim them, the bow wiggles (like anything in this game when you use two hands), the shots are too random, and I'm touching the back of my ear just to get a full draw out of either one.
My go to gear is the Katana on my back, AR-15 style rifle on the side of my bag, M92F on my right hip, and Samedi's Hand on my left hip, although I'm right hand dominant and don't melee with my left hand.
The Katana is just too good. You don't even need two hands, because it doesn't wobble, and you can easily decapitate zombies or humans you want to prevent from turning into zombies.
