Base game without DLCs?
Hey,

Base game worth itself or DLCs recommended anyway?
I've only played with 2205 and that was quite long ago so I don't know what to expect, but looking forward to this game long enough, because it looks promising.

for the campaign only you'll get 25/30 hours of gameplay, and then freeplay all you like, making challenges as you play;

for 5 bucks i'ld say that it's good enough (not for the full price!)
I was looking at this game, I like 2070 and this one is actually ranked the best in the series from online reviews, but my goodness the DLC list is overwhelming. There's more DLC here than even Stellaris has.

I appreciate your input Rincewind. I think I'll pass. 25-30 hours doesn't feel like a full game at all. And I wouldn't even know where to start looking at the DLC options to expand it. A lot of them look like they just add cosmetic building options.

There should be better replay ability in a game like this without needing DLC. Then if we love it, buy expansions, ect.

2070 is the best one still IMO.

1800 just has no charm. It has no character whatsoever. None of the actual characters are memorable at all. All the goods you create and trade are boring and generic. IMO the only upside 1800 has is running multiple maps at the same time, if you even count that as an upside, the micromanagement is probably too much for most players to handle.

No one mentioned the game also comes with standalone scenarios that you can challenge yourself with. I think the base game alone has 2 scenarios. Depending on how hard the scenario is and how many times you replay it, that would also add to play time. Achievements aside, there's also an incentive to achieve victory in scenarios because they grant ticket point rewards. These can be used to "purchase" as many cosmetic or specialist items (some which are unique) as your points balance can afford.

I'd argue the campaign is a tutorial. The core of Anno is and always was the endless game.

You can easily get 100-200 hours with the base game. I would even recommend to start with the base game and only activate DLC after you reached everything in the base game. Else it is becoming too overwhelming as you get 5 years of content from the start.

That's correct, a lot of them are cosmetic DLCs and can be skipped. The base game is worth it even without all the DLCs tbh. When I started playing Anno 1800 the only content DLC added in the game was Sunken Treasures and I had a blast with the game. The game is also very replayable with mod support, plus the AI opponents have radically different behaviors

The most content-packed DLCs are Passage, Sunken Treasures, Land of Lions, and New World Rising. These add entirely new regions to the game with their own questlines, in some cases populations

There are smaller Content DLCs that add new mechanics/features and are less important. Botanica, Seat of Power, Bright Harvest, Docklands, High Life, Tourist Season, Seeds of Change, Empire of the Skies, The Anarchist.
These all tend to focus on expanding one part of the game. IE: Bright Harvest allows you to mechanize farming, Docklands allows you to export/import resources to a trader to help manage resource float, Seeds of Change adds the Hacienda structures and Fertilizer. A lot of these smaller DLCs usually also have a custom scenario with them as well

This is great feedback and information.

Special thanks to bwc153 for explaining the DLC list so well. Kudos mate ^^

If the Vanilla experience is decent enough as many are suggesting, I think the sale is reasonable enough to give it a shot. And I like how helpful and positive the community is on the discussion board.

Thank you everyone. I'm going to grab the base game and give it a shot.
Well I tried it and agree with Eightball. 2070 is way better IMO too. Glad I got to try 1800, now I know. I'll stick with 2070 and call that the best Anno lol.

Happy Gaming Everyone ^^
