What does ectoplasm buildup do?

Seems like I can get it to build all the way up without much consequence. What is occurring when it builds up?

from what i understand it leaves a blue puddle under you but ya its not very punishing hopefully the devs do something about it and im not joking when i say me and a buddy where legit talking about this like 20min ago lol

The blue puddles behind you are the ghost footprints. They are always there. Regardless of the ecto level

I wonder if it would be better to have a blue aura or something if you hit full ectoplasm. Discourage the risk taking.
