Some of the players are still downloading, and, you know, timezones. In any case, I would consider 2k players (minimum 8 per lobby, so roughly 250 full lobbies) as quite a lot already.

I harbour the same concerns , but not for early on. I think as long as it runs well it will do well for a month or two.
If I can get a month of casual lels out of $20 Im personally happy.
I would suspect a reasonable release rate of content will be required to keep the population alive.

Downloading the game and watching my friend play it. Matchmaking is pretty fast and if there's dedicated playerbase for it, no need to worry much since even games like Depth with 300 online players have fast matchmaking.

I would be more worried if this was an game that came out in early access during October
seeing as most "spooky themed" games in that window are quickly abandoned after making a quick buck.

and since coffestain is well known for publishing niche games for decent sized player bases i would call this a safe purchase.
That said if you wish to air on the side of caution then just keep your eyes on it via the Steam Follow button on the store page.

It just came out?? Its a indie game so it might take some time to get a following but by word of mouth alone I have had several people get the game off showing them the trailer to them alone and they are having a blast.

Worried about player count from indie game that didn't got basically any marketing? I heard about this two weeks ago and now it's an EA release. Insta buy for me even I really can't afford atm, but world needs these kind of games and I'm happy to participate.

Just give it time. This is gonna grow!
