Dropping to my death

Yes, I saw the diagram on the outside...I know there is a "hidden" ledge/alcove.

But I've dropped off about a dozen times now, holding the D button to back up as I fall, and never hit that life-saving ledge.

I dropped down and turned around and tried going forward...no luck.

I've tried the other sides of the pit...no luck.

Any advice here? So tired of doing this same level over and over.

Also...any way to restart the shooting levels without X'ing out and going back in? At this part, I have to reread all the emails before it will let me try again, which is just adding to my frustration.

Found I missed it the first time when testing the right hand side, and since guide said it was the "back" side I kept focusing on that.
