2. I have seen storms go down into the canyons on medium maps, but i've never been down there when it happens.
3. dinghy gate needs wood structure. so it seems the sand one is only good for firefly. and it looks like you have to make a hangar for after dinghy
4. tile burn is gone. hopefully if they bring it back tiles will have a lifespan of a month or more. otherwise requiring bases just isn't going to mesh with tiles constantly burning.
5. don't know.
6. yes you can hit the villages with ballistas. a dinghy with two ballistas can take out a ballista fairly fast.
For materials its all on what you want to use for maintnace on pve, and wooden walls have more flexability in building. I personally have all my bases but my main hanger built out of sand though since its so easy to get thousands of sand. My dingy hanger is a full sand structure with the wooden dingy gate.
as for fighting villages, seige weapons on your own walker helps allot, i usually snipe the rupu ballista towers with my own ballista before going in on foot.
Edit: https://i.gyazo.com/75cbd36d6b494f673830d2ecd6e01193.jpg just an example of my sand dingy garage, this building here holds 6 dingy comfortably (with a total up to about 9 if i really cram em) i added the extra hight just so i didnt have to drop wings, you dont need it this high if ur dropping wings.
Is there any trick to mix the sandbag walls with woodden dinghy gates? I read (and Baneblackguard above also mentioned) that dinghy gates stick to wood structures only.
then there is something very buggy about it because my base was essentially complete with one little section of roof missing, no where near where the walker was, when i logged back in the walker was decimated and the crafting stations were badly damaged or gone.
since then i've made sure the space is completely enclosed and haven't had any issues. if direction matters then how did that happen.
dinghy gate wont let you build on a sand base it pops up a message saying it only works on the wood.
i'm getting very confused at the statements you are making because they completely contrary to what i've experienced in the game with season 5.
are you describing your experiences with season 5 now, or was this stuff you did in testing before season 5 released?
and your base may have taken damage if it was wood, there was a bug up till the latest patch that sandstorms could pass through holes in wooden bases causing internal damage. never had that happen to me but i dont build with wood except for the gate and hanger peices.
If you want i can also just make a quick gif of me in game placing a dingy gate onto sand.

I've noticed height a bit but storms tend to run the length of most valleys/canyons I've found so it's not super helpful.
Same with you opening a garage door - it seems to take a bit to get inside if is mostly walled off and not running in the same direction as your open door and hitting walls.
no problem
we had a large sand garage with a single large opening, and about 75% of the times storms didnt do any dmg since they didnt come from the right direction to hit the walkers inside.
and i mean if needed next storm i can make a small gif showing taking dmg, then walking behind a wall to stop taking damage, and show a walker taking dmg, then moving it against a wall of right direction and it stop taking dmg but this stuff is super easy to test and confirm for anyone.
So: valleys are not protected from storms.
And I could survive by sticking to a rock what made a wind "shadow" for me.
So yes, the storm damage definitely have direction - but sometimes the game not models it properly - eg in a small hole, what supposed to protect me, I got damaged, but out in the open of the proper side of a rock formation I got no damage.
