Storm and base questions from a newbie
1. Do I "feel" right that sandstorms have damage direction? Eg if it blows from south, my walker wont be damaged if it sits in an open garage with the easter wall missing (I have no access to the bigger door yet)
Also, do I need roof to be protected from the sandstorm or the walls are enough?

2. Is there sandstorms in the watery "valleys" on the second type of map? (non cradle)

3. What is the advantage of the advanced structures (eg wooden walls) over the starting sandbox one on PVE maps? Cheaper maintenance or something?

4. Do I see right at this time there is NO tile burning?

5. Any chance to live as nomad with mobile base, or in S5 bases always fixed and cant be moved?

6. As solo player, is there any chance to raid the villages with several ballistas? They seems to be impossible not to crack.... fighting rupus on foot I have no problem, but those ballistas I dont know what to do with...

1. it seems if it's not enclosed anything than can be damaged in that space is subject to damage from the storm. direction doesn't seem to have anything to do with it.

2. I have seen storms go down into the canyons on medium maps, but i've never been down there when it happens.

3. dinghy gate needs wood structure. so it seems the sand one is only good for firefly. and it looks like you have to make a hangar for after dinghy

4. tile burn is gone. hopefully if they bring it back tiles will have a lifespan of a month or more. otherwise requiring bases just isn't going to mesh with tiles constantly burning.

5. don't know.

6. yes you can hit the villages with ballistas. a dinghy with two ballistas can take out a ballista fairly fast.

Direction is everything in the storm, depending on direction u can move your walker against a wall oncoming to the storm and protect it, so a hanger with 3 out of the 4 sides having walls and 1 opening, most of the storms wont damage your walkers, you also dont need roof on hangers for protection. This also applies for natural protection from giant rocks/cliffs, theres afew spots on the map u can have a walker fairly well protected naturally from the storms.

For materials its all on what you want to use for maintnace on pve, and wooden walls have more flexability in building. I personally have all my bases but my main hanger built out of sand though since its so easy to get thousands of sand. My dingy hanger is a full sand structure with the wooden dingy gate.

as for fighting villages, seige weapons on your own walker helps allot, i usually snipe the rupu ballista towers with my own ballista before going in on foot.

Edit: https://i.gyazo.com/75cbd36d6b494f673830d2ecd6e01193.jpg just an example of my sand dingy garage, this building here holds 6 dingy comfortably (with a total up to about 9 if i really cram em) i added the extra hight just so i didnt have to drop wings, you dont need it this high if ur dropping wings.

Thanks for the quick responses.

Is there any trick to mix the sandbag walls with woodden dinghy gates? I read (and Baneblackguard above also mentioned) that dinghy gates stick to wood structures only.

then can be alittle finicky attaching them sometimes but not too hard to attach them, just make sure to have your sandwall at least 3 high and your gate should connect to it.

then there is something very buggy about it because my base was essentially complete with one little section of roof missing, no where near where the walker was, when i logged back in the walker was decimated and the crafting stations were badly damaged or gone.

since then i've made sure the space is completely enclosed and haven't had any issues. if direction matters then how did that happen.

dinghy gate wont let you build on a sand base it pops up a message saying it only works on the wood.

i'm getting very confused at the statements you are making because they completely contrary to what i've experienced in the game with season 5.

are you describing your experiences with season 5 now, or was this stuff you did in testing before season 5 released?

that picture i posted was taken seconds before i posted it, current game, u can come check out my base and see dingy gates on sand if u want, im just in open rift, pve zone offical server.
and your base may have taken damage if it was wood, there was a bug up till the latest patch that sandstorms could pass through holes in wooden bases causing internal damage. never had that happen to me but i dont build with wood except for the gate and hanger peices.
If you want i can also just make a quick gif of me in game placing a dingy gate onto sand.

If you're in a canyon hit by a storm you just get hit by it like normal.

If you plant yourself between the giant rock pillars in the direction the wind is coming in those vallys, you will not be hit.

I dont think so. Direction doesnt matter. Its rather the height when the storm goes "over" the cliffs.

I've noticed height a bit but storms tend to run the length of most valleys/canyons I've found so it's not super helpful.

Same with you opening a garage door - it seems to take a bit to get inside if is mostly walled off and not running in the same direction as your open door and hitting walls.

i always build sand base with dinghy gates
no problem
lammaer Aug 18, 2022 @ 3:10pm
I can happily confirm the dinghy gate works fine and without tricks with the sandbag walls.
Kalisa Aug 18, 2022 @ 4:21pm
and i can confirm direction of storm does matter allot, we often just park our larger walkers against a wall facing the storm when a storm is hitting rather then rolling them into garage and they face take no damage, but it has to be direction storm is coming to block the damage.
we had a large sand garage with a single large opening, and about 75% of the times storms didnt do any dmg since they didnt come from the right direction to hit the walkers inside.
and i mean if needed next storm i can make a small gif showing taking dmg, then walking behind a wall to stop taking damage, and show a walker taking dmg, then moving it against a wall of right direction and it stop taking dmg but this stuff is super easy to test and confirm for anyone.

I just had a sandstom in the valley.

So: valleys are not protected from storms.
And I could survive by sticking to a rock what made a wind "shadow" for me.

So yes, the storm damage definitely have direction - but sometimes the game not models it properly - eg in a small hole, what supposed to protect me, I got damaged, but out in the open of the proper side of a rock formation I got no damage.
