The other option is to have two walkers or more. I have a spider that I do most of my harvesting from. It is quality 13, so I can stack up to 10 modules to reduce the weight of the stuff in it. I store a ballista, a campfire, and a medium chest in it. Once it starts to hit about 500 in weight, I then take it to the edge of the map, transfer as much stuff as I can carry and transfer to the lobby. I pull out my walker where I have my stuff stashed. I transfer the stuff I collected to it (in a base in it) and then transfer it back to the lobby.
Storing you best stuff in a base in the lobby reduces your exposure. Instead of being exposed to attack for the whole time you are playing, your loot is only exposed for a short while that you pull it out to transfer stuff to it. Kind of a pain to have to do it that way, and there are a few other strategies you can use, but I think the above is the safest.
Some people will hoard Fire Bolts, some will not, but everyone has at least a small amount of Rupu Gel laying around and can craft some firebolts on demand.
Most small raiders wont bother with breaking small walkers, especially if you don't look wealthy.
Cursing and insulting your attackers in map- and voicechat is a sure way to convince them to go the extra mile and take everything. Many people seem to fail at self control and make their fate even worse that way.
The T3 upgrades for the spider walker are pretty convenient, especially water, since it jumps from 80 to 180 and allow you to travel much farther with such a small walker.
