The spider isn't really slow at all, it's only slightly slower than a stiletto.The advantage with the spider is it can be equipped with armored legs and can pack 3 crafting stations/chests, and it can climb sheer slopes (pretty much vertical surfaces). It's lower profile and lack of wings also make much harder for enemies to board it, and when they do, it's more difficult for enemies to attack the driver due to the low seating position. My guess is the firefly is slightly faster once it has wings installed, this is a double edged sword though, as it makes it easier for enemies to grapple and board your walker, you also sit slightly higher on the firefly than you do the spider, making you an easier target for melee attacks.
