Someone in the beta said they did use the steam controller and with a little work could make it viable but said ps4/othe controllers may have a bad time cause not enough buttons. But i don't think the game itself will have internal support for controls. But it would be nice especially if it goes to geforce now.

Just looking at the Twitch Streams, doesnt seem like there would need too many buttons. I mean ARK and ATLAS both work well with a controller as well and FF14.

if you haven't figured it out by now, steam support for controllers is much better than a control system a dev for any game could implement. You can literally take any controller, even a nintendo controller or android phone, and customize every button any way you like with modeshift buttons to increase the output capacity. You can adjust all the sensitivities or add rapid fire buttons, or have one putton press activate three key presses. it's limitless. nobody needs controller support.

Go into big picture mode and in every game's big picture steam page there's a controller configuration tab.

Controller support is more than just moving the guy and buttons. Navigating menus and dialogs for example. Awkward menu navigation break some games that otherwise would work with a controller.

That said, is there a lot of menus like shuffling the inventory in the game? Drag and drop necessary?

This is correct, some games do not translate well, but i have also had issues with games where steams controller support causes complications with games and will not work. Like Rocket League for example, if i use steams controller support it will not work with my Xbox controller but it works fine without the steam support enabled. I have had this issue with other games as well but cant dont remember specifically which, i play RL daily so it stands out.
