Mine does it too, except it's only in offline mode. When I'm online it launches and plays fine. But if I'm set to be offline, it crashes immediately. I too am asking if anyone has a fix for this.
You need to go to your wolfentsien folder on your computer, go to main file and delete it and other wolfenstien folders saved there. What this does is reset the game to its original format. DO NOT change your screen resolution, loads of people, including me, reported it crashes the game, which then you need to delete the files

Mine just does this and nothing else. I tried the various unofficial patches also, but nothings helps??

I have win 7 Ultimate x64, HD5770 4GB RAM and Intel E8600 CPU. I just bought RTCW for my steam today so is never played before. I got fully updated system drivers, that I have also checked.

And there lies your problem. This is a game from 2003. Your hardware is from the future when it was released :) It wants to use drivers that don't exist anymore.

You have a intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2.4GHz. The game only requires only 400MHz, and 128MB of RAM. I don't really see how you have a problem, especially for those low requirments and I can run the game with my intel Core 2nd Gen i3-2350M 2.3GHz processor (6GB DDR3 SDRAM). Try erasing you configs, and then validate you game, that helped me when the game stop launching.

Hey all,

I just spend a good 10€ on this game out of nostalgic reasons, only to find a huge dissapointement on my screen, similar to the topic here. I'm not a very familiar with Steam, so had no clue about this forum even, before all this.

Been searching for these config-files previously mentioned above but couldn't seem to find them at all in the steam-folder. My computer is up to date, so that's not the problem (should anyone wonder). It's prob like Bitexion says, because I have a computer with drivers from the future.

Any advice from you folks?

EDIT PREVIOUS POST; Should anyone ever in the future come across this problem again, I found the solution through a good friend who directed me to this site http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2979733

Download the patches and install them in the map Steam > Steamapps > common > Return to Castle Wolfenstein and you should be fine.

Good luck and happy gaming!

for me this issue is resolved by playing on a 32bit windows 7 system.

I'm still on WinXP SP3, game crashes at launch (SP and MP), can't even get to title screen.
Reinstall didn't help as well (total delete then redownload)

Is it possible to play it via STEAM?

Not true. I played this about a year ago and it worked perfectly. Started it this year, crashes.

-snip- Never mind, I just had to delete the "gl" folder that was created. Game works great at 1920x1080 now!
