Yeah.... critical error after I tried to adjust my resolution. Apparently I have to "reinstall" the entire freaking game.

Steam, you need to demand a patch for this.

For anyone else reading this years later, the easiest solution is just to delete the wolfconfig.cfg file found under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Return to Castle Wolfenstein\Main. When you start the game up again, it'll run at a normal 4:3 resolution again.

If you want to play at a widescreen resolution, download the ioRTCW sourceport and run that instead. Extract the files into your C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Return to Castle Wolfenstein folder. From there, you can simply doubleclick the "ioWolfSP" executable to open the game in the sourceport. Here's the link to the github release:
