Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Linux?
Wikipedia says that it was released "for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Linux and Macintosh" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Return_to_Castle_Wolfenstein ) . Is there any chance to see linux version on steam?

The binaries are available here
https://launchpad.net/~tobydox/+archive/rtcw
The only thing needed is for Steam to let us install it
It is not only released for GNU/Linux, but also GPL'd. Thanks to id!!!!111
You can compile it yourself. still requires resources so you must buy it.
I LOVE ID!!

Would be nice to have the Linux version available on Steam
My dad actually found an old CD for the Mac version of RtCW in his desk last summer. I checked out ID's public FTP server and downloaded some of the launchers and beta updates, and eventually I got it working on all of my computers, including my Ubuntu desktop!
All of the game files are in the "Main" directory, and those are the same across every platform. The launchers are the only things that change from platform to platform, and ID gives those out for free.
Sadly, the Mac version of RtCW will only launch on versions 10.6 Snow Leopard and older, as Apple removed support for PPC applications in 10.7. However, there has been an effort to get a native launcher for Intel-based Macs a while ago.
As for Linux, you need to install an archaic version of libstdc++ to get it to work. You can download the version you need from the Debian archives[archive.debian.net] for free. Just pick the correct version of it for your architexture. If you're on x86_64 like me, you need to download the i386 .deb, extract it, and put the file and symlink in /usr/lib/, and then you'll be able to launch the game. It took me over 2 months to find all of this out, so I'm posting it here in the hopes that I'll be able to save at least one person the trouble I went through.

TL;DR: The game uses deprecated software to run, which is a pain to find, but it's totally worth it!

I was about to comment that it was impossible, but you know what? It's "do-able"... ID software offers a linux installer which use the windows version files, so all it needs it's a binary file (an executable). The only problem that I see, is that nobody play or wan't this game any more.

not true, I'd love to play the game again, if they would make the linux version available in Steam

I'm looking too. For years it was the only game I played on Linux.

If you browse ID's public FTP server, you can download the Linux installers, then just drop your game files in the same directory you installed the launchers to, and you're all set!

First I tried to get it working using the old installer .run files from the FTP site.
I installed steam and RTCW in wine to get the pak files. btw in wine the game would not start.
I installed the first linux installer .run file ok but the .run patch file did not run due to a 64 bit issue.
I did some googling where there was some info about compiling it all manually.

Then I found the Github page where the binaries are already build by Tobias Doerffel.

https://launchpad.net/~tobydox/+archive/ubuntu/rtcw

I added the ppa but apt-get update could not find the url.

So instead I downloaded and installed the 64bit deb file.

whereis rtcw-sp
rtcw-sp: /usr/bin/rtcw-sp /usr/games/rtcw-sp

I sudo cp the pak files to /usr/games/rtcw-sp/main

Run
rtcw-sp
It worked perfectly for me (tested 20min into the game)

So thanks Tobias Doerffel

I would re-purchase this game (have boxed version) if the Linux version were released on Steam.

Because it depends on libstdc libraries that must be manually installed, and have been outdated for the better part of a decade... While it is possible to run RCtW on a modern linux setup, it's not easy enough for them to warrant putting it into production.

Add libs to distribution, LD_LIBRARY_PATH=blah blah blah...
It's not quite that simple... Because the lib is so old, there's bound to be security holes in it. It's also not guaranteed to work at all on newer systems. I can't say I'm happy about it, but I can understand why Valve isn't listing this as available for Linux.
These games should definitely been available on Steam for Linux

It could be fun, even though these games are old.

you can play RTCW "natively" without wine, but also without steam (ioRTCW):

download the windows steam copy of the game with steamcmd
howto guide:
https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/2uvj4p/linuxgamingprotip_use_steamcmd_download_steam/

and then download and unpack this
https://github.com/iortcw/iortcw

if you have "pak0.pk3 not found" window, then copy files from Main to main (linux is very case sensitive). your file manager would ask you to Skip or Replace existing files - click Skip
