Why is this so different from the Xbox version?

I don't know where you got that info but multiplayer has been in RTCW since day one of it's release. I know because I bought the original on the day of release. The RTCW MP community was one of the most organised of all online multiplayers at that time with official tournaments, championships and even a global community that had 24hr games twice a week with ranks (like Lt and CinC) and rankings and all. only thing left from that is a hall of fame of players at http://www.angelfire.com/hero/throbbingrod/HallofFame.html where little old me is proudly listed between some of the best RTCW veterans around
He is correct, the XBox version had a coop mode the PC never got (well, there were some mods but it wasn't the same thing). It allowed a second player to take control of Agent One (the guy who was tortured to death at the start of the game) playing through the entire game but removing cutscenes. EDIT: Actually just tested it today, coop doesn't actually remove the cutscenes, it just doesn't acknowledge Agent One being a part of the events.

The competitive multiplayer mode was largely the same with a couple of additional maps that didn't make their way to the PC (3 I believe, Safe, Norway & Barn) as well as the new pump action shotgun. I believe only Soldiers and Engineers could use it but I'm not sure. I literally got an old XBox a few months before XBox Live was shut down for the original XBox so I had a fairly limited time to play it online.

fair enough, I am old skool MP is not the same as coop to me. coop is what you play with your "poor" neighbor that can't buy the game for himself. MP is online exclusive against the best the world has to offer. (not that I consider myself among the best) hence my comment that he made thw wrong assumption. :) guess I need to find that xbox version and check that coop out myself ;) I stand somewhat corrected

I'm a HUGE RtCW fan (both MP & SP) so I was always butt hurt that the console versions received an expansion packs worth of exclusive content that never made it's way to PC. See http://wolfenstein.wikia.com/wiki/Return_to_Castle_Wolfenstein:_Tides_of_War for list of single player additions alone.

I eventually caved in and bought a cheap used original XBox to play it. Alternatively if you have a XBox 360 its also compatible with it, but runs a bit clunky with the emulation.

If you do decide to get the console version, get the XBox version as its superior to the PS 2 version (no shotgun or coop in PS2 and the hardware isnt as powerful so levels chopped up more).

Do NOT buy the console version to see the new multiplayer maps. You can't even sign into XBox live anymore so theres no way to even start a map by yourself to see what they looked like.
Does anyone know how exactly the co-op mode of the Xbox version runs on 360?
The Wikipedia compatibility list says "unplayable", but that's quite vague.
The Xbox online service is down (stopped) if I'm correct, that's why ^^'

Actually, you can play split screen coop with two controllers. I just tested it a day or two ago to make sure it was available with Xbox original live service down. I'd assume that if you played it on a 360 you could also hook up two controllers and play it split screen. I'd test it myself but my 360's drive broke and I haven't had the interest in fixing it.

Well that's what I'm curious about. Is it "emulated" in a playable state on the 360 as well? Did anyone try it?

I tried it on a 360 years ago. It was playable, but I remember some pretty bad framerates in spots which is part of the reason I found a cheap original XBox. I'm sorry I can't test it right now and give you more information. Like I mentioned the drive on the 360 died and I haven't got around to fixing it.
