Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Resolution fix that worked for me
For the error:

GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem return to castle wolfenstein

I tried doing everything that mentioned a fix in these forums but nothing worked for my 16:9 resolution. All I did was go into wolfconfig.cfg and change these five lines to this:

seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_fullscreen "1"
seta r_customwidth "1600"
seta r_customheight "900"
seta r_customaspect "2"

When you go in game everything will probably look squashed, so go into your video settings and try changing your resolution. When cycling through them you should see resolutions that weren't there before like 1600*900, 1920*1080 and even all the way up to 3840*2160.

Also note that they will also have WS beside it to indicate "Wide Screen" mode.

Hopefully this helps anyone that's having problems. :AOEKnight:

You also need to set r_mode to -1 in order to have the r_custom cvars working :)

A guide is about this in the Steam Community; The only issue is it stretches the render :/ A good thing would be to adjust cg_fov along with (there're tutorials about which value for which resolution on the Internet).

I forgot about that, I set the seta r_mode to "23"
What do you mean stretches the render, like in cutscenes or just the game itself?

The game by default is rendered in 4:3 format, even with r_customaspect the rendering is "stretched" to match the values of the r_custom values

For cutscenes I don't think so, they're recorded

It looks fine when I'm playing it, nothing is stretched. Does it get worse on like 2k resolution or something? I'm currently playing on 1600*900.

Example

In your case not stretched but a bit flattened (from 1600x1200 res). It's a bit noticeable on the stairs on the left for instance

I did this but now I can't do anything because the whole screen has stretched so much that I can't see hardly any of the main menu, as if its zoomed in really far

Try holding down alt then press enter to do window mode. Then try changing your resolution in game.
Doktor Mandrake May 4, 2014 @ 5:22pm
Hmmm, alt+enter doesn't seem to work, but I was using the unofficial 1.42a patch.. I deleted wolfconfig.cfg so it'd set back to default, which lets me get back onto the menu.. But when I set it to 1600x900 WS it seems to do that weird zoomed it thing.. But 1600x900 is my native resolution, any ideas?

Edit: never mind I think I've fixed it, I had to change "seta r_glIgnoreWicked3D" from "0" to "1"

Although the resolution still doesn't seem right to me, like before on the first cutscene I could see every flag, but the top flag (the U.S one) gets cut off the screen, making me believe it's not showing the entire screen :s

Thank you very much dear Sarah.
I play now.... 1600x1200 res.

Hmmm, should i try the patch too? Is it save?

Yes, even the source code is available on GitHub if you wanna check

Also most "standalone" mods use it (RtCW Coop, Venom iirc)
