No, keep the hosts file, remove the hosts.txt file: it has to bo extention-less.

Mine has:
# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
107.161.23.68 wolfmaster.idsoftware.com
if you deleted the original file, try restoring the system to get it back

Isnt wolfenstein enemy territory the exact same thing as the multi player portion of RTCW just free?
No, main differences:
- No covert-ops in RtCW.
- No Command Posts in RtCW.
- Gameplay feels a bit different, UI is different too, graphics are a bit lower.

ET was supposed to be a SP and MP add-on for RtCW before getting a free standalone MP-only game
basically no one plays the multiplayer anymore
That's why you have servers with 20 to 30 players each evenings.
There is one server that has 20-30 players every night, but Enemy Territory has many more players =s
