So my answer: it's very iffy. Look up Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory on Google. It's a free online only game, and it was basically made for RtCW. It's an official release, so it's safe. If you can run that, you'll have no issues with RtCW. If not, you may wanna pass :/
At the bottom, you will find a patch for Return to Castle Wolfenstein, one that is easy to apply (just copy-paste the content of the zip file in your game directory). It worked for me (on Windows 10)

Just installed the game and installed the patch, works fine on my Win 10 system. Before the patch I was getting the startup error.

I had it running until I choose 1600x1200 in the setting menu then I could not get it running again
