Is it possible to remove the scope on the mauser rifle?

I know that when you first get the mauser rifle, it does not have a scope and can be fired from the hip, though once you find the scope, the rifle does not have a hip-fire crosshair. I get that this is to balance it as a sniping weapon, though currently I am in the level in the church, I am low on ammo with my submachine guns and pistols, and I want to be able to use the rifle, so I would like to know if it possible to take the scope off the rifle (like with the silencer on the pistol).
I would very much appreciate it if anyone knew if it is possible to do so.

i dont know how much this helps you but ive found that when fighting the monsters in the church, for anything that prefers melee i too would use melee(by using knife and kick). doing so saved me a lot of much appreciated ammo for the elite guards

i have the same concern, makes it harder to fight back against ranged targets that end up in the spot between too far for smg but too close to snipe without recieving return fire

I did but at the "shoot" piece I couldn't find anything that said zoom.

z = zoom and alternate fire, or middle mouse button

Just doing a play through after many years but this time with RealWTCW and yeah, I was a big dispointed as well, the unscoped rifle was awesome, any medium to far targets it was a one shot, but as soon as scoped it lost the fire from the hip capability, it still works, but as you no longer have the aiming dot/circle it is a lot harder to do.
