Old CD Keys Don't Work for Steam?

I'm guessing old CD Keys don't work for the Steam release of this game.

Hi, there. I recently watched a video on YouTube that renewed my interest in this game. I actually have my original CD-ROM and jewel case, as well as my original CD Key. I recently became aware that this game is on Steam, so I figured I'd try my original 2001 CD Key and see if it worked. Honestly, I was a little surprised to find out that it doesn't. Now, my question: is this intentional, or is this an oversight?

On the one hand, it seems odd that the old CD key wouldn't work for the Steam release. A few titles are able to use old CD keys for activation / purchase. On the other hand, though?
I wouldn't be surprised if Steam can't use the old keys either for safety reasons or for some other reason. Either way, I don't guess five bucks (USD) for such a great game is going to break the bank, but still… would've been nice to use my old key.

Thoughts, anyone? Cheers.

You bought a CD, not a Steam purchase
Else anybody could get the game for free as long as they would find a key online or just seing one

I s'pose. But then, there was a whole (outdated) list of non-Steam games[web.archive.org] whose keys work with Steam, so…

Yea this worked perfectly fine before, not the game doesnt work, and even if we can get it to work the CD keys ♥♥♥♥ us for TOAK. I've tried everything and nothing works.

Ive been playing this game since 2001 and have never had these problems.

Yeah I remember many years ago being able to add my old CD key and having it work but upon trying this again recently turns out I had to buy it again.

IIRC it didn't have full "integration" back then though and there were no achievements or anything.
