Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Return to Castle Wolfenstein

So, I kinda played myself when changing the resolution.
After many tries to open this game, I downloaded the Unofficial 1.42d Patch as my last resort to finally get it to work. Luckily it did.

It opened with 640x480 (if I remember)
Since my laptop isn't unfortunately made for games (which sucks) and RTCW is quite old, I thought that this wouldn't really hurt if I'd change the resolution to 1366x768. (And made a mistake by instead of typing in 768, I wrote 786...)

It closed the game and now, it refuses to open yet again, even with the patch installed.
Not even the launch options or compatibility settings can help.

Just edit the value in wolfconfig.cfg, but forcing it widescreen will vertically cut parts of the screen

You should use ioRtCW: https://github.com/iortcw/iortcw/releases

Prefer the x86 release over the x86_64 if you want to run vanilla save games

I don't really mind the parts of the screen being cut.
But is there some kind of a file that has the custom resolution saved somewhere?

The only mistake I made is instead of 1366x768 I wrote 1366x786 which is a few pixels too high for my actual screen and that's what I intend on fixing... Unless it's all in the wolfconfig file and I just don't see it.

Yes, CTRL + F to search, r_custom, and voilà

Kayyy. That resolution problem seems to be over now.
Now, I got a different kind of an issue.

The Wolf Console seems to be flashing the red words VM_Call with NULL vm
looked up the letters vm in wolfconfig and got something like this:

seta vm_ui "0"
seta vm_game "0"
seta vm_cgame

I don't know, am I supposed to switch the 0s to 1s?
Null means zero afterall.

for years I could never get this game to run, from your problem to a console command problem I just had 0 luck until I used to RTCW coop mod, that works fine on all modern machines and you can play single player

I am having an issue opening the game, on the console this message flashes in red...GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem,

if you could help me on this, it would be very much appreciated

Hello Young, first of all, ignore everything Brea has told you. He's trying to get you to install a multiplayer version of "RtCW" in order to play the singleplayer. That's what RtCW Cooperative Mod actually is:

rtcw coop = the singleplayer version of RtCW, converted for use in multiplayer

The two main games we play, "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" and "Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory" are very old now. In order to deal with this problem, our Wolfenstein Community have created modern versions of these wonderful games.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory now has ET: Legacy - https://www.etlegacy.com/download

Return to Castle Wolfenstein now has ioRtCW - https://github.com/iortcw/iortcw/releases

It doesn't matter if you use a linux, Mac or Windows operating system, there's a version of ioRtCW available for you to use. Download the appropriate version of ioRtCW that you need for you operating system and install it.

Your RtCW folder should look something like this when you've installed ioRtCW:

You'll will then have a very modern install of "RtCW" to enjoy, a version that has all the modern features that we take for granted in newer games.
