Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Game is too fast?
I am not a next-gen player, but using the ioRTCW sourceport - version 1.51b, Linux, 64-bit - I have an impression the game is way too fast in pace. I have never played Quake 3 for real to compare, but this kind of speed matches multiplayer standards at best, making the singleplayer run rather annoying. Otherwise, the design ideas are very fine. See and tell if this is normal, though the video may be glitchy, as I do not have a gaming rig, but playing on a laptop, perhaps also sound slightly desyncing, even though that is another issue - link HERE[drive.google.com]. The vid will be here for some time, eventually I will take it down to conserve my cloud drive space.

EDIT:

Actually, I bought the game to specifically experience the iDtech3 in practice, so, is that it?

You're playing with an excessively high FOV, so it seems to be fast.
To play it right, set the FOV to 90 and see in the console if \g_speed is set to 320.

Correct, it is "320", therefore must be the case of FOV for the impression, nonetheless, the basic pace is pretty high for an almost stealth game anyway.

Thanks for the hint, g_speed of "240" seems to be very well fitting.

Regarding the ability to run, do you happen to know which parameter responds to energy consumption and energy regeneration? Is it in the config file at all?

Rtcw, almost stealth game? Wut?

Well, okay, I might have overdone the statement, but there are good stealth moments in the game.

EDIT:

I guess my attitude towards this game is going to be similar to that addressing the Doom^3, namely, I will like it very much, but only with certain mods included.

From what I saw of your video, only the FOV seems jarring, the speeds itself seems fine. But then again, I played it back when it came out as well, so maybe it's a thing if being used to it I guess...

Certainly it is good for the multiplayer, the higher pace of gameplay. Taking that the game is based off a specialized arena themed shooter, it is no surprise some trends carried over.

For now, I have made myself an autoexec.CFG with two functional commands:

seta cg_fov "120" seta g_speed "240"

Playing the game on a highest difficulty level. I have not yet reached any major heavy combat stages, arena style, therefore I keep watching if the lowered pace does not cross the path of some balancing made, rendering me unable to succeed due to compromised speed.

Jumping and sprinting eat stamina

FOV of 110 is enough for MP, dunno why in SP you would change it, but heh

120 is max for RtCW, 110 for ET, I think Q3 goes as high as 125

I just like to have wide FOV, kind of taking a privilege of being on PC. But in truth, the narrow FOV is driving me nuts. Perhaps people can play it from like five meters on a wide TV screen, cannot tell by own experience, but on a PC from half a meter distance, wide FOV is better.

Shootouts in Return to Castle Wolfenstein are rather static, as far as I have recognized, depending on taming of the gun accuracy, but maybe I do it wrong. Bad keybindings, perhaps. Nonetheless, on highest difficulty level it is easy to die fast rushing forward.

Good game, bad engine. The iDtech3 was created for nothing else than arena shooters.

Speaking of FOV, do you know which parameters respond to FOV of binoculars, scope, machinegun view and other possible zoom options? I would see what their original percentage is, regarding the native FOV of 90 and adjust them to the current used FOV of 120.

EDIT:

For further tweaks, the stick grenades are useless, they bounce way too much and their radius is too small.

Other than that, I would also increase a bit the damage dealt by opponents {you crazy}.

The assassination system is good, working closely with area damage.

But the altogether feel to the gunwork is rather clunky.

PS.

Whatnot, this is the most realistic one of all the classic iDtech games.

source for that information?

Myself, an opinion. Quake 3 has been a disaster to the quality of Quake franchise and the commonday remake of Quake 3, the Quake Champions, gets what it deserves.

iDtech3... nah.
