Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Random Slow Downs
The game runs perfectly fine until I experience random slow downs that act as if I've turned on a cheat to slow the game down. The frame rate doesn't stutter and there are no issues with the sound when this happens. Everything just moves in slow motion until the game decides to start running it's normal speed again. I'm not sure what's causing it either. I thought that maybe it was caused when a lot of things were happening on screen but I've also had it happen while just moving from one location to another.

These are my settings in-game:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=931108668

These are my system's specs. Let me know if I'm missing anything:

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate - Service Pack 1
Processor: AMD A10-7850K Radeon R7, 12 Compute Cores 4C+8G 3.70GHZ
RAM: 8GB
Video Card: GeForce GTX 760

I've tried pulling up the console in-game by pressing "~" and typing in different iterations of the "r_primitives" command:

- r_primitives (Does nothing.)
- r_primitives 0 (Does nothing.)
- r_primitives 1 (Does nothing.)
- r_primitives 2 (Does nothing.)
- r_primitives [0] (Does nothing.)
- r_primitives [1] (Does nothing.)
- r_primitives [2] (Does nothing.)
- /r_primitives (Console doesn't recognize that command.)

I've also tried setting the launch options of the game through Steam to both "+set r_primitives 2" and "+set r_primitives 0". No change.

I'm going to try setting the Nvidia Control Panel to use my preferences emphasizing performance instead of letting the 3D application decide to see if that changes anything.

If that doesn't work, I'll try disabling the in-game Steam overlay. I'll keep you guys posted. Just figured I'd get a head start in getting some assistance with this.

I think I managed to resolve the issue. I played through an entire level without any slow downs. I turned off the Steam Overlay and had the r_primitives set to 0. I realized that I was typing "/r_primitives" incorrectly into the in-game console and that's why it was showing up as an un-recognizeable command. For those unfamiliar with the r_primitives command, this is how it works:

- /r_primitives (This will show you what the r_primitives value is currently set to, as well as what the default value is.)
- /r_primitives 0 (This will set that value to the number specified.)
- /r_primitives 1 (This will set that value to the number specified.)
- /r_primitives 2 (This will set that value to the number specified.)

You'll need to run the "/r_primitives" command to ensure that the value has been changed as the console will give you no indication that what you typed in changed anything.

To disable the Steam Overlay just for Return to Castle Wolfenstein, follow the below instructions:

- Right-click the game name in your Steam library.
- Select properties.
- Uncheck the "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game" option.

Nevermind. That didn't resolve the issue. I tried setting the Nvidia Control Panel to use my preference emphasizing Performance along with the Steam Overlay being turned off but I'm still experiencing the random slow downs.

I guess it was just a coincidence that I was able to play through a whole level without slow downs after I disabled the Steam Overlay. I want to clarify that I did experience slow downs on that level before disabling the Steam Overlay.

I guess I'll just play the game as is until someone throws me a bone. The game isn't unplayable; just that the game's pacing is thrown off at random intervals.

Now the opening movie's sound tends to become static and then completely cut out when I first open the game, regardless of whether or not I have the Steam Overlay on. The opening movie I'm referring to is the one that shows ID Software, Activision, etc.

The only reason I bring that up is because the time that I didn't experience any slow downs is when the opening movie's sound didn't become static and cut out. Unfortunately the opening movie is also completely random on when it wants to work properly too.

Hello, i can help you.

First, download and install the unofficial patch:
http://www.markshan.com/knightmare/downloads/rtcw-sp-1.42d-win32-bin.zip

To install it, just extract the zip and overwrite everything in the rtcw folder in steam, this will allow you to use bigger resolutions (even 4k !!) and fixes a lot of problems.

Second, i did that and still had the max payne slowdowns like you described so i found this on one guide:

In your Steam Library, right click on the game, click Properties, then Launch Parameters... and type +set r_primitives 2 in the text field. The value will be set upon each launch of the game through Steam this way.

I tried it and now i can play at 60 fps in 1366x768 no slow downs, i finished the first two levels with no problem.

Killer007, I wish I wasn't so reluctant to install that unofficial patch sooner because it seems to have resolved the issue for the most part. Upon installing the game and running it again, it ran a lot more smoothly with very rare cases where the game would slow down. Those moments were far and in between, and the length of them was significantly shorter. I tried setting the Launch Options to +set r_primitives 2 but that made it run worse.

After removing the Launch Options, I played the game without it slowing down even once. Probably another fluke but the game is indeed running better overall. I greatly appreciate your assistance.

^ This patch helped me a lot.
I had a totally different issue, an AI Scripting error, and that too on the last mission of all levels.
Fixed that.
Thanks a lot man.
