On a side note: why romance her... <_<
because of the achievement ofc!
She's a girl. This is typical girl behavior so it's all good.
Many things written about this game are awful, especially characters' faces :D
Well that is not a "writing" issue and I wouldn't say that many things are written awful (but I play it on German which is the OG language so it might differ from your experience). However tbh I see a general lack of good written female main characters in games, so I am used to it...
I see no problem with the way Caja acts. I mean I've met a lot of women and just with her cool german voice, she comes across pretty authentic. What are you missing? Super mega depth?
I see a problem with her that I started to call "the Panam"-problem. Apparently "strong, independent women" need to be ♥♥♥♥♥♥, irritating and frustrating to deal with, shout and yell at you and insult you if you don't agree with them. Apparently being rude and aggressively unpleasant counts as "stronk".
Yes I know that you can point out to Caja eventually how she behaves. Which results in even more insults until she SUDDENLY is like *gasp!* I am behaving totally irrational! Let me ignore my own son and sulk in the fort. Basically doing a 180° turn there just to say a day or two later: ah this is so boring here, get me out of here Jax.
(oh yeah and just the fact that the MAN has to point out to her how irrational she's acting... yeah. Sigh.)
There are some imo good written female characters in games that are actually strong without being totally obnoxious (Liara from Mass Effect franchise comes to mind) but more than not I see "strong female characters" being, well, like Nasty or Caja - or Panam from Cyberpunk.
It highly irritates me and unnerves me.
I hope Nyra is different, I really do.
I'm a storywriter myself for indie RPGS (last game Dead Age 2) and play a lot of women. So I was very interested in the topic. I think what's a problem with the whole romance thing is that the characters can't be too "normal". Because you want to entertain the audience.
I'm sure you're right that there have to be nice, strong women, too. I think Nyra goes in that direction, but Nyra has the problem that she only gets excited about her own themes. This was certainly intentional because of her lack of emotion, but it frustrated me because I always tried to make up for my mistakes , hehe, I think as an Alb, however, you will easily make it.
With Nasty I noticed of course how she is on it and with Caja it was argued that she is harder on it because she now has her leadership position. I find the situations where she was aggressive have been limited to 2-3 moments (but I'm not quite through yet, but have won her love) I must honestly say that my ex-girlfriends were much worse - haha. :)
But good that you say something like that, I will think about it in my work for my next RPG. :)
Anyway.
(yay someone is hearing me out)
That being said: why is that a female character, to not be "too normal", has to be, well, like this? Take Falk for example. He's polite, curious and adorable and hilarious, too. And there's a big twist aswell in his quest line. The character doesn't need to insult Jax to be interesting.
My problem with Nasty is also, that even if she's supposed to be literally nasty (which is fine, I guess) why on Earth is she still written in a way that even she seeks Jax' attention? Like: why is the first thing she talks to about Jax, when you meet her, that he slept with Caja? Almost like "wow, you really picked her over me" just to drop this "Don't look at my ass, I know you do it" line later? It comes off as quite pathetic and doesn't fit her already very one-dimensional character not at all. Why would Nasty of all people care? Except if she's secretly into Jax too and jealous? Which doesn't fit her either.
About the leadership position: that is exactly my problem. Badass female leader = unpleasantly aggressive. There are other ways to characterise badass female leader and still make them even somewhat "evil" or "cold." (Liliana in DA:I for eg)
There are also female characters in video games that are more "brute" and certainly not softies, like Cassandra (also DA:I - Bioware actually imo often did a good job with female characters) but at least she doesn't need a man to tell her that she is like that. She knows it. She also knows what she wants, what she is and what she is capable of.
I found 1 the worst part for Dead 2 was the romances, especially from a continuation point.
