I hope 1.0 finally fixes it, or melee will be the way to play.
It's a combination of bad underlying physics (any ranged shot on uneven ground or ramps is just so off its not even funny) lazy/poor coding and then layering multiple systems on top of that without ever fixing it. It's also one of the reasons despite many efforts that combat feels so floaty cause the hit detection and physics is garbo.
The fact your hit rate for range shots goes down when people are close to you is an indication they kind of jury rigged the underlying physics early on and its never going to be up to snuff.
