Hi! I'm quite familiar with LE and I just finished the campaign. I don't recall seeing anything new from this update in the campaign. There were nemesis encounters and loot lizards but those aren't brand new.
Oh wait....there were champions. Yeah....these are lame. Just stronger rare enemies that drop more items? Some with special affixes? But I didn't get anything good. Worst mechanic added in a long time, by far.
No, you're not missing anything but not playing a new character unless you want to experience leveling up new skills or something like that.

But anyway.
You can play Legacy just fine all of the new conted added was implemented to Legacy on launch. Playin Seasonal character is mostly for Online play - economy reset, everyone starting from 0 etc.
You can play the new content from 1.2 on your legacy characters, as this new content is core and not season exclusive. If you had a Sentinel pre-1.2, your passive tree should be reset/modified as the class has been reworked.
