Can I switch challenge type mid game (solo to non solo)

I just played about 12 hours on my first character not realizing the solo challenge checkbox locked all my items to a single character and not a "solo mode" like I thought. I selected it with the intention of wanting to avoid hardcore challenge shown above it thinking I was selecting it's opposite.

Pretty disappointed feeling right now now starting my second with no access to the cool uniques I've collected. I really wish I could just flip a switch and make it non solo and i'd be fine with never being able to go back and continue my quest! I think one of the Diablo games has a way to make a hardcore a softcore as a one way street didn't it?

When reading the solo info text again I see my mistake but the UI isn't doing anybody any favours putting it directly beside hardcore mode acting as an alternative when it's an addition too. I would recommend dividing those challenges options in a different way to help the user understand their impact more fully. This is why most games show MASSIVE RED SKULLS when it's selected warning users they are adding extreme difficulty to the game.

Anyway, I feel severely punished for a mistake and it's resulting in not wanting to do another run through, which no developer wants :)

Within the game’s Settings under the Challenges tab you can choose to abandon this challenge. If you abandon the Solo Challenge all items in your stash (chest) will be lost, as well as your gold and crafting items. This character will be moved to softcore and have access to the shared stash, gold, and crafting materials that reside there. Only your characters currently equipped items as well as those directly in the characters inventory will be transferred over to the softcore mode.

You can not re-enable this challenge once it has been disabled for that character.

*Softcore (SC) mode being the standard mode -- when no challenges have been selected. Your stash, gold, and crafting items are shared amongst all characters in this mode.
