I need help understanding the whole mechanics of this game

i'm new to ARPG games and I tried leveling a paladin to 30 and I keep messing up my builds and armor like I have no idea what to equip. I made a forge knight and i was getting rekt. I deleted it out of pure anger.. I could use some guidnance on this game. I don't know what I am doing wrong. And the loot filter system is weird for me.

You have a couple options. You can check out Last Epoch Builds website which shows you where to put each point and what gear to go for. Many have youtube videos to explain everything to why you want something to what stat does the most etc.

If you dont want to sue a guide you can come up with your own build but be sure to read into the skill trees and you can see the synergies. Example you can use warpath to spawn in forged weapons or smite. Can go bleed or fire. Just find things that work together. Many skills or items can trigger other skills which just increases damage and utility.

Go here and don't look at builds but under build guides I have linked it above. The reason I say this is because build guides explain the mechanics on the skills and why they combine the skills and what the build is like to play and how to play it.

You do not have to follow them slavishly but you can then have an idea of what is important and what the skill needs. Certain aspects of Last Epoch are not intuitive so you have to use guides to help you understand the game.
