and not being on Steam, is the definition of being out of touch.

Now if you mean they do not frequently comment the cesspool that goes for forums on Steam, there are many, many, many developers (indie and otherwise) that do so, and it has nothing to do with being out of touch. It has more to do with communicating with your community in an area you have proper control over.
