D3 crusader has nothing on LE Paladin and its options and we're getting another awesome one for 1.0. The only thing Paladin can not be is a summoner.
Paladin is extremely fun and tank, while packing a serious punch.
Remember this is ARPG, ALL options are DPS, it just happens so that paladin actually brings so much more though heals and aura buffs.
No problem at all with solo DPS paladin mastery.
Not sure what you mean by competitive though. If you mean meta build then nobody knows. If you mean top of the leaderboard then nobody knows and it largely depends on how much of your life you're willing to give up for it. If you mean relative power compared to other classes then it should be fine.
As someone who hasn't played the game - I don't know, that's why I'm asking. And I'm not talking strictly in comparison to D3, it's just that this is the archetype that is most typical to be stuck as some sort of aura bot, with the rest of it's capabilties suffering on account of how powerful the buffs are.
