Lower settings if you want to play for longer before restarts.
It's not ideal, but it works.
So you're saying it's unplayable, gotcha
No. I've played through the campaign and at level 90 in empowered monoliths since launch entirely on the Steam Deck.
Every 3 Seconds im in a Menu like for example my Inventory i loose 1 FPS.. permanently until i either restart the Game aor my Steam Deck crashes.
For some reason, after some time, i see Items on the Ground, but i cant pick them up and also their Names arent showing up on the Ground.
Each time i Teleport, no matter of Town Portal or Way Point all Enemies including Bosses just respawn and my Minimap resets itself to not being discovered at all. I could Farm Bosses that way extremely fast if it wouldnt be so extremely annoying.
I often cant interact with NPCs, even tho i see that they have a huge Quest Marker above them. But i just cant clickt at them.
Ofcourse, the Game often crashes for no apparent reason.
And much... muuuuuuch more.
As much as i like the Game, as much its basicly unplayable for me on the Steam Deck. Which is a shame. Because i can play Diablo2 Resurrected without Issues on the Deck, and its quite Fun having an easy to play ARPG always with you. You know.. hacking trough some Demons on the go.
Wish they fix all the Issues so its just playable.
The only time I've experienced the continous FPS drops until crash/freeze is when it runs out of memory. You can keep track of it by turning on the performance overlay and restart the game before it happens.
I started a new character today, and had a problem with talking to a quest NPC for the first time. I have the trackpads setup to use left/right mouse clicks. Using left mouse click on the NPC worked.
All maps will reset when you leave the area, including map discovery, enemies and items, that is how the game currently works.
But the last thing .. i mean with the Map reset. Is that a Feature or a Bug? Because it feels like a Glitch/Bug. It doesnt feel right at all. It feels very much wrong tbh.
Annoying to say the least and not sure it is healthy for the deck.
So I looked into a solution.
Over on Reddit, someone recommended installing CryoUtilities. (available over at GitHub)
I am hesitant to install outside 3rd party software, but this sounded good, so I took the step and installed it (there is a Youtube video showing you how to do it, yes, I am a technological neanderthal, and still managed to do so).
Anyways, I tested the game all day yesterday with CryoUtilities on recommended settings. I played for 6 hours straight (basically like I did on the weekend) and I had ONE soft crash to desktop. Yes, one crash, and only one that did not freeze the entire Deck.
So for me, this is a HUGE improvement.
However, some people say that they should NOT be needing to install 3rd party software to be able to play a game. These people do have a point!
But, what can I say-
I just like the game and I want to play, so I installed this 3rd party software and it made the Steam Deck experience indeed better.
Oh, and yes, I also have the issue with not being able to interact with NPCs. No big deal for me, because the only thing I need to do is use the touchscreen and click on the NPC with my finger. Problem solved. Minor hassle.
So far, I have no issues with Steam Cloud, or the mini-map, but I do keep saves on my PC as backup, just in case I run into one of the save bugs which other people have reported and they lost their characters.
I admit- this is A LOT of more hassle I have to do with this game than I have to do for most of my other games. I speaks volumes on how much I enjoy myself that I go out of my comfort zone with installing 3rd party software on the Deck to make it run better. If this was a crap game with boring gameplay, I certainly would not give as much effort.
It is working as intended. It's been discussed during early access, I don't have a source, but I remember it as it having to do with server performance. When you get to the late game it becomes a non-issue with how monoliths and dungeons work.
Much simpler solution
I don't believe this for a half a second, having done such extensive testing I've refunded the game TWICE
I don't know what your experience have been like.
Through early access I've used the native Linux client for desktop, I wanted to try Proton for the Steam Deck instead of the native client, so I've been using Proton 8.0-5. I'm not sure if that has made any significant difference.
Initially there were black borders on the sides, changing the resolution to something different and back fixed it.
The vast majority of issues I've had has been with weird UI behavior, which seems to mainly be conflicts between mouse and keyboard controls fighting the gamepad controls. For example passive skill points being put in the wrong places. Those things are avoided with just using the D-pad to navigate the UI. Gamepad support is not great currently, but it is "good enough".
During the first launch days, there were obviously issues with online play, affecting everyone, not just Steam Deck users.
There may have been a couple of crashes during the campaign, but it didn't become a real issue until monoliths. Turning down the settings to reduce memory usage and keeping track of it on the performance overlay have made it very tolerable.
Using CryoUtilities as chirulahr suggested is probably a better workaround for now.
And then today I had the NPC interaction issue, which is solved by using a mouse left click (as chirulahr suggested can be done with the touchscreen).
That has been my entire experience with all the issues I can recall.
There is definitely a lot of room for improvement, and I expect EHG to fix the issues over time, but overall for now it's been fine.
Yeah, I didn't mean to come off as such a ♥♥♥♥. Truth be told I'm mighty huffy about the lack of accessibility options and the lack of stability in general.
I get it, the issues are frustrating.
Personally for me, having played the game on and off over the years throughout the early access period, it's easier to be excited for all the progress that has been made and not worry as much about what remains to be fixed.
I've seen how much it has improved, I trust they'll get the rest solved eventually and it is for me in an enjoyable state already as it is, despite some quirks.
For me, it always happens when the Deck reaches 14Gb RAM usage.
It really seems like the Game has a Memory leak that leads to the Deck crashing. ::(
Which is a shame, because generally speaking, the Game runs pretty smooth on the Deck.
