in-game guide exists to explain, the game "tries" to suggest to you via a side-mission to do it but doesn't handhold you step by step like other games do.
it's pretty cut and dry and not as complicated if you take a moment to read things associated with it
It always helps to balance resistance as you will need 75% in cold and lightning by the time you get to Act 8 bosses.
In general enemies apply 1% resistance penetration per level up to 75%, meaning in a level 20 area (press tab and see area level on top right of screen), mobs apply 20% penetration. If you have no resistance your resistance will be -20% causing you to take a lot more damage for a specific type.
I try to keep my resistance across the board slightly above the area level I'm leveling in if possible, (physical mainly at first) through crafting, applying either specific resistances, elemental (light, fire, cold) or vitality (poison, necrotic) affixes.
While it make little difference in the early levels as you kill things fairly quickly, it gets you used to crafting when ever needed and in general used to looking out for certain gear with certain affixes along the way.
Find what your build wants most, and if you find loot that has one affix you want and another free slot, craft the other damage modifier onto it to make it an usable weapon
