How does multiplayer work?

I wanna play this game with my friend, but Im not sure how the multiplayer works. Are we able to join into one game and progress story and gear together, or only the host will progress the story?

Progress is shared. So you can both progress. If you're further ahead or vice versa. you can play alongside the player who is behind until they catch up, and then both of you can progress from there. The game appears to have a rubber band system for levels too. So if you're a few levels ahead, your friend will catch up in levels pretty quick.

Any idea how it works for endgame? I have felt like the endgame is awful for coop and doesnt work well.

end game is shared as well. you can gift any item you drop while playing together. and you drop these "resonance" while playing together; this allows you to gift any item you find while solo, to your friend you found the resonance with.
