Considering that getting a character to the point of picking a subclass is less than 2 hours of gameplay, if it were something to make people play longer they did a terrible job at it. Could have gated the subclass choice to farrrrrrrr later like many other RPGs do instead of doing it only a few missions in.
Character select screen says you're a "Falconer" and not a "Rogue", so does the character sheet in-game, so does the ladder, so does every single instance of your class being mentioned. Their intent is for your character to be defined by your mastery.
Also, ARPGs are made for quick rerolling of new characters, this one's no different. Back in D2 we didn't even have respecs at all, then they added 3 respecs per character in a patch but that was it. Just reroll, try out new stuff, progress all over again, that's the spirit of ARPGs.
The mastery selection used to be behind Eternal Emperor, and not the current boss, so it was like 5 hours into the game before.
Thank god for it too, could not see myself doing the same cookie cutter leveling build for the extended hours anymore.
