If you wanna play a build that needs specific unique/items right from the get go you might be better off with merchant to buy some cheap versions of them to get you up and running or if you do not enjoy say searching/crafting for your BiS items simply farming gold/favor to buy them from someone else might be better.
CoF is better on the other side, You will more or less be showered in loot that you will need to sift through to find proper gear to use.
You can also freely swap between the two at any point in time, you just cant use any gear you got from one faction as the other. So you cant say buy items from the merchants guild than use those to farm as CoF. Much like if you play CoF any items that drop from the bonus passive ranks or from your prophecy you cant equip when you are in the merchant guild
mg if you like trading.
A single player can never farm as much as 100000 size community, Also note that playing COF you get as many if not more irrelevant drops (for other classes/builds), but you can sell nothing of them, period.
MS demands a certain amount of time and effort to learn and use properly. This is good or not good depending on if you like trading aspect or not (I'm always drawn to goblin-wannabe-activities, as an example)
COF lets you continue doing what you already have been doing, and get more loot drops, without the need to have to engage in another game mechanic.
Farm with COF, use the common stash. Your main character will get access to both MG gear and gear from COF runs, as long as the dropped gear is tradeble using the shared stash.
MG gear cannot be equipped by non MG characters, but it can be shared with them. Which is odd, but that is how it works.
