Rouge shuriken doesnt feel that powerful?

So I did one rouge made them a marksmen then got a staff that gave plus 3 to shuriken, decreased its cost and gave it pierce and all together a pretty nice so I figured Id make a new rouge and level it up to use that. However im using it now and it just... feels weaker then an unmodified primary attack. The only thing I can think is it needs the deadly aim skill to shoot in a line but even then that cuts down my thrown ones by half, am I just missing some part of them that makes them useable?

Gear in this game is mostly just a gimmick, or a way to round things up. Unlike Diablo, where gear is very powerful and enables certain builds, in LE most of your power comes from base damage ( flat damage ) which you get from passive points and skill nodes. Uniques are mostly used to improve on that.

Most shuriken use is as a proc from other skills as far as I'm aware. It's not very good as the primary ability
