look at this.you don't need a full army of undead.one or two is better
The beastmancer squirrel build is pretty darn strong and fun (though it requires a unique to turn your wolves into squirrels if i remember correctly) - just it lacks in aoe dmge.
Necromancer has several pretty strong minion builds, but for really high corruption most of them fall off, due to minions dying.
Flame wraith is just OP and (in my opinion) pretty fun to play.
Friend played Necro-style with skeletons+golem. He had absolut no problems too.
So I would say YES. There are several minion-builds which work very well and are fun.
