If you press view materials in your inventory you can hover over the shards to see what items they can be used on.
And i have no idea why we need that button...
After getting that... i think you will see that the crafting system is a really nice one :)
If you still have problems with it there are good YT videos from ActionRPG.
As others said, press the button to send shards to their place. Press the "g" key in game for the guide, this things are explained there.
except they do. You just have to press a button. i know, people prefer even easier.

The way crafting works is one of the best things about LE.

Agree, the crafting is quite well done. I do think there should be a bit better of an introduction system for the new players though, if only to avoid well threads like this. It is refreshing to see the community react helpfully, a nice change of pace.
