Don't pick up what you don't need, stack uniq\purple items\good idols, keys, etc for all characters, not only your build. Dismantle items with needed for current character stats by special dismantle rune.

Long term, you will want to set up a loot filter. You need to ensure only the loot you want to see is dropping. Loot filters are intimidating at first but very powerful and well-worth learning to use.

And yes you can use a Rune of Shattering to destroy items for their components. But these Runes are rare and expensive, so you do not just shatter anything you find; make sure you get max value with every Rune you use.

OK so Uniques aside, the loot that is dropping falls into 4 categories.

1) An absolutely perfect and awesome item that is a straight upgrade for you. This is the rarest category of all and this will NOT happen often. Maybe less than 1%.

2) Simply a bag of shards. Much of the yellow loot is simply to be shattered for its component shards. In general you should only do this with yellows that have 4 affixes, in order to maximise your shard haul, but you might shatter a 3-affix yellow or even a blue if it has affixes you really want for your build (or very rare ones).

3) The perfect BASE item. This is an item that is likely blue or yellow and which has at least 2 affixes on it that are perfect for your build and can be further crafted. This is the hardest item to spot, and is the reason you need a loot filter. Once you get a great base item, you are going to craft it hard in the hope that RNG lets you build a genuinely awesome item.

4) Everything else is vendor trash. Not even worth Shattering.

In summary: Most of the great loot you will eventually use (that is not Unique) will be crafted by you, NOT found. If you dislike crafting, uninstall this game now.

Just bought the game. Great loot breakdown, appreciate it.

what i like to do when starting a new character in cycle is to look for as perfect roll in base item as possible and use discovery on it as it will get 4 a bit harder to get shards most of the time with good base and you can get lucky with crafting it further with randomizing the unwanted one with upgrade.
