How rare are they anyway?
Dont remember seening any when i played some year ago.. but i have found 2 now.
Worth keeping until i hit max level or should i just use to try to get some item while leveling?

Just found my first one. I'm curious as well. Is the item level randomized or around your current level? reluctant to use it while leveling if that's the case.

Anyway since i got 3 of those shards when i had leveled to 62 i thought i would try one on a bow, since i might make an archer next..
I got Drelkors compass for a level 64 character lol
I looked for that bow a lot a long time ago in single player and never found it.

They are used to convert a regular item to a unique in the same item class(pay attention here, not same item base, just class). Also, this method can't get you boss drop only uniques, just general ones. They are pretty useful if your build needs a common drop unique but you haven't found it yet. You can also use it on amulets or shields to try to target much rarer items that drop seldomly.
