Safety in Numbers

Asking for a clarification on this skill before I put points in it, realize it doesn't do what I hoped it would do, then losing those points.

It states "You can summon wolves up to your maximum number of companions". Does that mean, if my max is 3, I can summon 3 Wolves AND the Sabertooth (or any another pet)? My current max is 3 which means I can summon 3 wolves anyway so I'm not sure what Safety in Numbers buys me.

I realize the wording is different than Pack Hunters, but I just wanted to be sure.

it means you can fill in upto max..

If you use a sabertooth, you can fill upto max - 1 with wolves, (if max = 3, you get 1 saber, 2 wolf)

Thanks for the quick reply, and I forgot I have the "The Claw" equipped. That gives me max of 3 wolves rather than 2. In this case, SiN is pointless unless I gave up the amulet.
